It is the politest disagreement in our booking inbox: northeast or northwest? Corfu’s two great boating coasts sit barely an hour apart by sea and could hardly be more different in character. Both fill a seven-hour day from €1,000 per vessel. Both send people home convinced they chose correctly. This guide exists because, depending on your group, one of them genuinely is the better choice — and after years of running both routes, we can tell you how to tell.
The northeast: the sheltered one
The northeast coast runs up the channel where Corfu leans close to the mainland — Kalami, Agni, Kassiopi. The water here is the calmest on the island, particularly in the morning, because the coast itself blocks the prevailing northwesterly. The scenery is intimate rather than imposing: cypress hills sliding into clear green bays, white pebble coves with olive trees behind them, and the famous corner at Kalami where the Durrell family lived in the 1930s.
Its character in three details: tavernas with private jetties at Agni where you step from deck to lunch table; swimming stops every fifteen minutes if you want them; and the Albanian mountains as a permanent, slightly unreal backdrop across the strait.
Choose the northeast if your group includes young children or nervous swimmers, if a long taverna lunch is the centrepiece of your idea of a good day, or if anyone aboard prefers their sea flat. The half-day version (from €700) also makes it the best short option on the island.
The northwest: the dramatic one
The northwest route is a different film altogether. Past the island’s northern cape, the coastline rears up into white limestone walls, and the run down to Paleokastritsa delivers the most theatrical scenery Corfu owns: cliff faces dropping straight into cobalt water, sea caves cool enough to raise goosebumps in August, and coves like Stelari and Chomi that no road has ever reached.
This is the coast for people who want to feel they have gone somewhere. The swimming stops are fewer but more spectacular; the photographs need no filter and no explanation. Paleokastritsa itself — the monastery on its headland, the chain of blue bays — is best understood from the water, where the coach parties become invisible.
Choose the northwest if your group wants drama over convenience, if snorkelling depth and cave ceilings excite you more than taverna jetties, and if everyone aboard is happy with a livelier sea on the open stretches. Morning departures matter more here — the afternoon breeze reaches this coast first.

- Calm water: northeast, decisively. The channel is the most protected boating on Corfu.
- Scenery: northwest, for sheer drama. The northeast is lovely; the northwest is astonishing.
- Children: northeast — shallow coves, short hops, easy lunch logistics.
- Photography: northwest by a margin, especially late morning when the sun reaches the cliff faces.
- Food: northeast — Agni bay alone settles it.
- Caves and snorkelling: northwest, where the limestone does its best work underwater too.
